Back in May the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ran safety test on the Chevrolet Volt, three weeks after the crash tests had conducted the battery pack caught fire because of a ruptured coolant line in the battery. Now GM is offering free loaner car to any VOLT owners with fire anxiety, until the “resolution of the issue” is found. GM North America president Mark Reuss said in a statement that, “A vehicle loan program of this nature is well beyond the norm for a preliminary investigation, and it underlines our commitment to the vehicle and its owners. These steps are the right ones to take regardless of any immediate impact on our operations.” Come check out the all-electric Nissan LEAF at your 2012 Seattle Nissan LEAF dealer. While GM does not anticipate any problems, and NHTSA has said that unless the VOLT has been in a serious accident then there is no reason for concern. Still, GM is taking no chances in losing customers, CEO Dan Akerson has said that the battery pack may receive a redesign.
